If you’re a nature lover, photographer, or birdwatcher, then you must check out the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive. An 11-mile nature drive in Central Florida, you’ll be amazed by the variety and abundance of wildlife that call this place home.
The drive starts at Lust Road and ends on Jones Avenue in Orange County. It’s open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays from 7am to 3pm, and all vehicles must exit by 5pm. The drive is one-way only, once you enter you have to complete the route. There are no bail-out points along the way. The speed limit is 10 miles per hour, and you have to share the road with bicyclists, who are also welcome to enjoy the trail.
Along the drive, you’ll find pull-over areas where you can park your car and get out to admire the views. Conveniently located restrooms and picnic tables are available at select stops, allowing for a comfortable and leisurely experience. You’ll also see signs that indicate an audio tour stop, which you can access online. The audio tour gives you an overview of the history and ecology of Lake Apopka and its north shore.
One of the top three birding destinations in the state, the wildlife drive is a birdwatchers paradise. While anytime of year is a great time to visit, the winter months are the best time for bird watching, when more than 150 species visit the property.
