Parking and the trailhead for Buford Spring are located within the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area. If you’re using GPS, be cautious—some maps may direct you to the Hernando Sportsman’s Club, which leads to a road with a locked gate that’s only open seasonally. Instead, continue a few minutes south on US Highway 19 (Commercial Way) to reach the correct entrance.
Once inside, stop at the pay station. If you’re visiting to scuba dive, you must check in at the ranger station before proceeding. Follow South Road until you reach a fork, then stay to the right to continue on Rattlesnake Camp Road. Continue along this road until you reach a four-way intersection, where you’ll turn right onto 3 Bridge Road. After a short drive, you’ll arrive at the parking area for the spring trail.

Keep in mind that all roads in this area are unpaved. We managed them easily in a standard car, though it’s wise to watch for deep ruts, especially after rain. Parking is limited and this spot is popular, so plan accordingly.

The entry fee is only accepted via cash or check; there is an envelope/drop-box payment system, no change is provided – make sure you bring singles with you. If you are there to dive, you need check-in at the ranger station.
There is also an option for a yearly pass. See here for additional info on fees and exemptions.

The hike from the trailhead to Buford Spring is approximately 0.3 miles. The trail starts out sunny, then switches to mostly shade. With a mix of hard-packed ground and boardwalk, the trail is wide enough to bring a wagon for your gear.
If you’re coming here for a swim in a spring, this is a really small one; we wouldn’t recommend traveling too far to get here, it’s better left for folks living nearby.
Buford Spring is a cavernous spring featuring a small dock and ladder. The sink is popular with experienced and certified SCUBA Divers. Remember you must register with the ranger station before going for your dive, and that a Chassahowitzka WMA SCUBA Diving Registration is required & must be on file with FWC prior to diving. Diving here is extremely dangerous, and sadly people have perished here.

You can find a few covered picnic tables near the ranger station. Closer to the spring you can find a single picnic table at the end of Rattlesnake Camp Rd.

There is a restroom located in the area near the ranger station.

Additional Information:
•Remember that rain can brown out springs – you may be disappointed if you visit after recent heavy rains.

•This is an extremely dangerous dive, sadly people have perished here.
