Pithlachascotee River (The Cotee)

Paddling the Pithlachascotee

Paddling the Pithlachascotee River is considered ideal for beginners to the moderately experienced. There’s a few public access launch sites to choose from for your paddling adventure on The Cotee, with the most scenic part of the 6-mile paddling trail within James E. Grey Preserve. Beyond the park, while still charming, the river opens to residential properties.

The canoe/kayak launch at James E. Grey preserve is ADA accessible. Parking is free, and it is a short walk to the dock. You can find a covered picnic table and a kayak stand adjacent to the launch. The park restroom is near the playground, which is near the other parking area.
Being the most scenic portion of the paddling trail, this is our preferred launch spot for the Pithlachascotee River. On our paddles through the preserve waters, we usually spot turtles and a variety of herons; on a rare occasion we have seen gators and manatee.

The canoe/kayak launch is ADA accessible, and has two handicapped parking spots just to the left of the launch. Parking here is free, and the main parking lot is a short walk from the launch site.
You can also find covered picnic tables, a playground, basketball court and restroom at this park.

The kayak launch at Sims Park is ADA accessible. The closest parking lot to the launch is situated at the corner of Sims Lane and Grand Boulevard. From this parking lot it is a 1-2 minute walk to the launch. There are no fees for parking at Sims Park.
